Meal replacement shake: the rules, the nutrients, everyday life

Meal replacement shake: the rules, the nutrients, everyday life
At a glanceIn Switzerland a meal replacement shake may replace one or two main meals a day – as part of a low-calorie diet and with an adequate nutrient supply.

Quarter to seven in Kloten: the coffee is steaming, the bread is still unsliced on the board, and the train leaves in eleven minutes. For many people a meal replacement shake slips into exactly this gap – ready in a minute. Legally the matter is clearer in Switzerland than many think: such products are intended to replace one or two main meals, and that as part of a low-calorie diet. Everything else stays normal food. What that means for your everyday life, which nutrients belong in it and where a shake reaches its limits, we will clear up step by step.

What a meal replacement shake is – and what Swiss law says about it

A meal replacement shake is a drink powder that replaces a complete main meal: it provides protein, carbohydrates, fat and vitamins and minerals in a defined serving. According to the FSVO's explanatory notes, products in the category «meal replacement for weight control diets» belong to foodstuffs for people with special nutritional needs: they are meant to replace one or two main meals, are to be consumed as part of a low-calorie diet and must ensure an adequate nutrient supply. A shake is therefore not an addition to your existing menu, but takes the place of a meal.

The regulation has moved house a few times, incidentally. The definition was removed from the VLBE with effect from 1 July 2020 and regulated in the LIV in line with the EU; with the 2023 revision the requirements were integrated back into the VLBE and the category was excluded from the scope of the VZVM. You can read that up in the FSVO's explanatory notes on the VLBE.

Why so many people in Switzerland ask about meal replacement

The figures explain the interest. According to the Swiss Health Survey 2022, which the FSO published on 21 November 2024, 31 % of the resident population aged 15 and over were overweight and 12 % obese. The MonAM indicator from the FOPH and Obsan, built on the same data with around 22,000 respondents, sums it up: 43.0 % are affected, and 52.3 % among men. The proportion has risen since 1992 (30.4 %), and since 2012 the trend has stabilised.

What is interesting is which meal is replaced first in everyday life. In practice it is almost always breakfast – not because it is the least important, but because it is the least sociable. At lunch with colleagues or dinner with the family you sit at the table; at seven in the morning you sit alone in the kitchen.

Breakfast as a complete meal: a shake plus a drink

A meal replacement is a meal only when it is treated like one. That is why the Herbalife Breakfast Programme is built as a combination: the shake with milk or a plant drink, plus a drink and enough water spread over the morning. The set Herbalife The Perfect Breakfast 1 bundles exactly these components, so you do not have to hunt anything down in the morning. Important: it replaces one meal – not lunch, not the salad and not the portion of vegetables in the evening.

Taste decides whether a routine lasts three days or three months. If you like chocolate, the Herbalife Formula 1 Nutritional Shake Mix Dubai-style Chocolate Flavour 500g is a version that is more reminiscent of a dessert than of a diet product. One tub covers several weeks of breakfast, depending on the portion size. As a liquid alongside it, the instant herbal drink with tea extracts, mango and dragon fruit flavour fits well – half a teaspoon in warm or cold water, and the morning has something to drink alongside the shake.

If you prefer to compare things sorted, you will find the whole range under All Herbalife products or specifically at the Herbalife Formula 1 shake.

Nutrients, dietary fibre, sugar: the figures that count

A shake never stands alone, but within the frame of the whole day. The WHO recommends at least 25 g of naturally occurring dietary fibre a day for people over 10. Free sugars should stay below 10 % of daily energy intake – around 50 g at 2,000 kcal – and a further limit to 5 % can bring additional benefit. For adults, at least 15 % and at most 30 % of daily energy should come from fat, and unrefined carbohydrates around 45–75 %.

In practice that means: if your morning consists of a shake, lunch and dinner need vegetables, pulses or wholegrain in order to reach the 25 g of dietary fibre. The SGE's Swiss food disc gives the proportions for that. Which micronutrients meal replacement products must contain, and which statements are permissible about them at all, was dealt with by the EFSA's NDA panel in a separate opinion in 2015 – another reason why serious providers word things cautiously.

How to build the shake into a normal working day

  1. Put the shaker out in the evening, measure the powder out in advance. That saves the decision in the morning – and decisions are expensive at 6:30.
  2. Drink the shake sitting down, for at least five minutes. Standing up you are finished in 90 seconds and feel you have not had breakfast.
  3. Plan a second meal deliberately: lunch or dinner with vegetables, protein and a wholegrain component.
  4. Two weeks on the same flavour, then change. That way you notice whether the routine is holding or whether it was only curiosity.

And if the goal is not weight reduction? Then the same shake remains a building block of your nutrient supply rather than a meal replacement. You will find ideas for that at the Herbalife Weight Management or in the Herbalife blog.

A meal replacement shake is not a trick and not a shortcut – it is a meal in another form, with clear rules and a clear place in the day. If you would like to try how your morning feels with it, start with a flavour you genuinely like and give yourself two weeks. Questions about preparation or about how it fits into your everyday life? Frequently asked questions

How many meals a day may I replace with a shake?+
According to the FSVO's explanatory notes, products in the category «meal replacement for weight control diets» are intended to replace one or two main meals. They are consumed as part of a low-calorie diet. The remaining meals stay normal food.
Is a meal replacement shake the same as a protein shake?+
No. A meal replacement is composed so that it covers a whole meal and ensures an adequate nutrient supply. A pure protein shake is more of an addition to a meal – more on that at the Herbalife protein shake.
Is a shake enough to reach 25 g of dietary fibre a day?+
Usually not on its own. The WHO recommends at least 25 g of naturally occurring dietary fibre a day for people over 10, which is why vegetables, pulses and wholegrain products remain important in your other meals.
How many people in Switzerland are affected by being overweight?+
According to the Swiss Health Survey 2022, published by the FSO on 21.11.2024, 31 % of the population aged 15 and over were overweight and 12 % obese. The MonAM indicator from the FOPH and Obsan gives 43.0 % in total, and 52.3 % among men.
What belongs in a shake breakfast so that it is a complete meal?+
The shake with milk or a plant drink plus a drink and enough water through the morning. Sets such as «Herbalife The Perfect Breakfast 1» combine these components so the meal does not consist of the shake alone.
