Meal replacement in everyday life: how it works

Meal replacement in everyday life: how it works
At a glanceMeal replacement in everyday life usually means: making one meal a day predictable, while the remaining meals stay put together according to the Swiss recommendations.

7:14 a.m., the suburban train towards the airport, a croissant in one hand, your phone in the other. Anyone who starts the day like that knows the pattern: breakfast either does not happen or consists of whatever was quickest to grab at the kiosk. This is exactly where the subject of meal replacement in everyday life comes in – not as a big change, but as one meal that stays the same even on a chaotic Tuesday. The question is rarely «shake or plate», but: which meal of your day is the least reliable?

Meal replacement in everyday life: the short answer

In practice, meal replacement in everyday life means replacing one – at most two – meals a day with a portioned, nutrient-enriched meal, while the remaining meals land on the plate as normal. The rest of your diet continues to follow the official guidance: according to the Swiss dietary recommendations from the SGE and the FSVO for healthy adults between 18 and 65, that means 5 portions of fruit and vegetables a day, 3 portions of cereal products or potatoes, 2–3 portions of dairy products, one portion of pulses, eggs or meat, a small handful of nuts, 2 tablespoons of oils and 1–2 litres of drinks, water being best.

A meal replacement is therefore a building block in the day, not a nutrition concept in itself.

Why Swiss eating habits offer so many entry points

One figure few people guess correctly at first: according to the FSVO's Swiss Nutrition Bulletin 2021, 5.4 meals a day are eaten in Switzerland on average – 2.7 of them snacks. So more than half of all eating occasions are a mid-morning snack, an afternoon snack, a coffee with a biscuit or something quick between two appointments.

That explains why people often experience their main meals as «actually fine» and yet have the feeling that they have lost the overview. The structure does not lie in lunch; it lies in the gaps in between.

The same bulletin also points to supply gaps in the Swiss population for micronutrients such as vitamin D, iodine and folate; according to menuCH, women are also inadequately supplied with iron, men with zinc and older people with vitamin B12. And the statistics show how many people are concerned with body weight: according to the Federal Statistical Office, in 2022 31 per cent of the resident population aged 15 and over in Switzerland were overweight and 12 per cent obese.

Breakfast as the anchor meal

When one meal in the day is to become predictable, it is usually the first. It takes place at home, it rarely lasts more than ten minutes, and it often decides how the morning goes. A Herbalife breakfast is thought of here as a complete meal: a shake plus a drink, not a powder alone in water.

The Herbalife The Perfect Breakfast 1 bundles exactly this combination into one set – a nutrition shake and a drink to go with it, so you do not have to weigh up three tubs in the morning. If you need variety in taste, reach for the Herbalife Formula 1 Nutritional Shake Mix Dubai-style Chocolate Flavour 500g; the flavour is strong and chocolatey and works well with milk or a plant drink. And as a liquid companion to the shake, the instant herbal drink with tea extracts, mango and dragon fruit flavour is a good choice, drunk warm or cold and helping with how much you drink – you rarely reach the recommended 1–2 litres by accident.

You will find how such a shake can be adapted individually – with berries, porridge oats, cinnamon or a spoonful of nut butter – at the Herbalife Formula 1 shake.

Three typical everyday situations

Instead of general advice, here are the three moments when things most often tip over in Swiss working weeks:

SituationTypical patternPredictable version
Morning before 07:30Coffee standing up, a croissant at the stationA shake with a drink as a fixed anchor meal
Lunch at the officeTakeaway chosen under time pressureDeliberately plan a warm meal as the main meal
Afternoon snack, 16:00Whatever is lying around the officeA prepared snack in the drawer

For the last point it is worth looking at Herbalife snacks – not because every afternoon snack has to be replaced, but because a deliberate option in the drawer takes the sting out of the spontaneous decision.

What to look for in the composition and on the label

Two professional reference points help with the classification. In its 2015 opinion on «total diet replacements for weight control», the EFSA proposed a minimum energy content of 2,510 kJ, or 600 kcal, a day – meaning products that cover the entire daily requirement, not a single meal. And the WHO recommends limiting free sugars to less than 10 per cent of daily energy intake, which at around 2,000 kcal is about 50 g; under 5 per cent brings additional benefit.

In practice that means: read the nutrition table for one prepared serving, not per 100 g of powder. The way you prepare it – water, milk, plant drink – clearly changes the protein and energy content, and that is exactly what decides how long a meal carries you. Anyone who regularly feels hungry again soon after a shake has usually prepared it too thin, drunk it too fast or kept the portion too small.

An observation from many conversations in Kloten: almost nobody fails because of the product. People fail in week 3, when the routine gets boring. Two flavours in the cupboard cost little and solve exactly this problem.

How to start this week

Meal replacement in everyday life works best when it is unspectacular: one meal, seven days, the same time. Afterwards note briefly how the morning went – no more analysis is needed. The remaining meals stay colourful, warm and out of the kitchen.

Frequently asked questions

How many meals a day may you replace with a meal replacement?+
One meal a day is usual, and two in some plans. The remaining meals should continue to follow the Swiss dietary recommendations from the SGE and the FSVO, so they should contain vegetables, fruit, cereal products, dairy products and protein sources.
How many calories should a meal replacement have?+
What is decisive is the value per prepared serving, not per 100 g of powder. As guidance: in 2015 the EFSA proposed a minimum energy content of 600 kcal a day for products that replace the entire daily diet – a single meal is correspondingly well below that.
What has to be declared on a meal replacement in Switzerland?+
Among other things, the product name, the ingredient list with allergens, the nutrition declaration, preparation and usage instructions and information on shelf life and the responsible party are compulsory. Always check this information on the original packaging.
Do you get hungry again quickly after a shake?+
That depends greatly on the preparation. With milk or a high-protein plant drink, a correctly measured portion and a little time while drinking, the meal usually carries you further than a thin preparation with water.
Can this be combined with office life and eating out?+
Yes, and that is exactly what the idea is for. According to the FSVO, 5.4 meals are eaten a day in Switzerland on average, 2.7 of them snacks – anyone who makes one meal predictable keeps full freedom for lunch in a restaurant or an afternoon snack with colleagues.
