Losing weight with shift work: why the body reacts differently

Your alarm goes off at 4:30 a.m. Or at 9 p.m. Perhaps not at all, because you only start at midnight. You eat when others sleep – and sleep when others eat. And still you wonder why the scales do not show what you would like. If you work shifts and want to lose weight, you face a challenge that conventional nutrition guides barely cover.

Herbalife 21-Tage-Challenge KomplettHerbalife 21-Tage-Challenge Power

If you are looking for a structured start: the 21 Day Challenge Complete is particularly suitable for beginners who want to change their eating habits step by step. If you already have experience and want to work more intensively, the 21 Day Challenge Power is an extended programme with additional protein support.

According to SECO, around 17% of working people in Switzerland regularly work shifts or nights – in healthcare, industry, hospitality and logistics. That is hundreds of thousands of people whose biological clock constantly fights against the work schedule. As Wikipedia summarises, shift work disturbs the circadian rhythm, which considerably affects metabolism, hormone balance – in particular leptin, ghrelin and cortisol – and sleep quality.

Why shift work affects weight – even without eating more

The real problem is not that shift workers eat too much. It is when and how they eat. A meta-analysis by Gan et al. (2015, published in Obesity Reviews) showed that shift workers have a significantly increased risk of excess weight – among other things through disturbed melatonin release and altered insulin sensitivity. The body processes the same meal differently at 2 a.m. than at 12 noon.

According to the Swiss Health Survey by the FSO, around 43% of the Swiss population aged 15 and over are overweight or obese. Shift workers carry an additional risk here. The WHO classifies night shift work as a factor that can encourage chronic illness, and explicitly recommends regular meals and enough sleep.

What many people underestimate: the vending-machine coffee with sugar at 3 a.m., the filled roll from the petrol station on the way home – these small decisions add up over weeks and months. The FOPH points out that irregular working hours can lead to increased consumption of snacks, sweet drinks and ready meals.

Meal planning: the most important lever

The Swiss Society for Nutrition (SGE) recommends a clear structure for people with irregular working hours:

  • Three main meals and up to two small snacks – regardless of whether your “morning routine” happens at 6 a.m. or at 6 p.m.
  • A high-protein diet, since according to EFSA protein has the highest satiety effect among the macronutrients and supports the maintenance of muscle mass when calories are reduced.
  • Avoid heavy meals after 10 p.m. – the stomach works more slowly at night.
  • At least 1.5 to 2 litres of water a day, even though thirst is often weaker at night.

Sounds logical. But anyone sitting in the break room at midnight rarely feels like unpacking a prepared quinoa bowl. This is exactly where practical solutions help. A Herbalife Formula 1 shake with around 220 kcal and about 18 g of protein per serving can be prepared in two minutes – even in a hospital kitchen or a break room without a cooker. The Formula 1 Café Latte variety combines the shake with the taste of coffee, which can be a welcome change for the early shift.

Eating before, during and after your shift

Think of your shift as three phases: the hours before, the shift itself and the time afterwards. Before the shift you need a filling meal with complex carbohydrates and protein. The Perfect Breakfast pack offers a well-thought-out combination here that can be prepared quickly – whether your “breakfast” takes place at 5 a.m. or at 5 p.m.

During the shift: light snacks. Nuts, vegetable sticks, a protein bar. Herbalife Herbal Tea Original is a low-calorie alternative to sweet drinks and can be prepared with hot water in seconds.

After the shift: this is where the biggest mistakes happen. Hunger after a night shift is real, but a heavy meal at 7 a.m. sabotages your sleep. Better: a light shake or a small portion with plenty of vegetables and some protein.

Sleep, exercise and the underestimated factor of routine

Losing weight with shift work does not work through nutrition alone. Sleep is at least as decisive. Anyone who sleeps badly produces more ghrelin (the hunger hormone) and less leptin (the satiety hormone). The result: you have more appetite even though your body needs no additional energy.

Darkness in the bedroom, fixed sleeping times – on days off too – and avoiding screens before going to sleep all help. It sounds banal. But it is rarely done consistently.

Exercise does not have to mean the gym. 20 minutes of brisk walking before your shift, a few strengthening exercises at home – that is enough to get the metabolism going. Thinking long term instead of going hungry short term

Crash diets work well for nobody – for shift workers even less. The body needs stability in an environment that is already unstable. Plan by the week. Prepare meals on your day off. Use a The Herbalife Monthly Pack so that you do not have to think every other day about what to take with you – the pack contains coordinated products for the whole month.

What most people do not know: even small changes – such as switching from sweet drinks to unsweetened tea or Aloe vera drink – can make a measurable difference over weeks. Not because a single drink works miracles, but because habits add up.

You work shifts and still want to shape your diet deliberately? Then start with a single step: plan a meal for tomorrow that you would otherwise have left to chance. Frequently asked questions (FAQ)

Why do I put on weight through shift work even though I am not eating more?+
Shift work disturbs the circadian rhythm, which affects hormones such as ghrelin, leptin and cortisol. This changes how your body processes food – regardless of the amount of calories. Disturbed sleep can also slow the metabolism.
What should I eat on a night shift so as not to put on weight?+
The SGE recommends light, high-protein snacks and avoiding heavy meals after 10 p.m. Vegetable sticks, nuts, a protein bar or a light shake are good options, for example.
Can I lose weight with Herbalife products despite shift work?+
Herbalife products such as the Formula 1 Shake can serve as a practical addition when there is little time to prepare meals. Losing weight always requires an interplay of a balanced diet, exercise and enough sleep, however.
How many meals a day should I eat with shift work?+
The SGE recommends three main meals and up to two small snacks – regardless of when your shift begins. Regularity is more important here than the exact time.
How important is sleep when losing weight with shift work?+
Sleep is a decisive factor, as a lack of sleep affects the hunger hormones and can increase appetite. Fixed sleeping times, darkness in the bedroom and avoiding screens before going to sleep can improve sleep quality.
