A healthy morning routine: why the first hour shapes your whole day
It is 6:47 a.m. The alarm has already gone off twice. You reach for your phone, scroll through the news, get up hurriedly, drink a coffee standing up – and by 7:30 you are already stressed before the day has even begun. Does that sound familiar?
A healthy morning routine does not come about by chance. It is a conscious decision. And it often begins with things that take surprisingly little effort – but make a noticeable difference.
According to the Swiss Health Survey by the FSO around 75 % of the Swiss population have breakfast regularly on working days. Among 18- to 34-year-olds it looks different, though: about one in three regularly skips breakfast. In this age group in particular it is often not time that is lacking – but a structure that works.
What many people underestimate: the morning is not simply the beginning of the day. It is the foundation. Anyone who starts shakily here fights against themselves for the rest of the day.
What really happens in your body in the morning
Between 6:00 and 8:00 a.m. your cortisol level reaches its natural daily peak. This hormone – often wrongly associated only with stress – supports alertness, concentration and metabolic activation during this phase. (Source: Wikipedia – cortisol)
In concrete terms that means: your body is biologically prepared in the morning to become active. It is practically waiting for your input. And this is exactly where it is decided whether you use this natural energy – or give it away.
After 7 to 8 hours of sleep your body is also in a mild state of dehydration. The EFSA recommends a daily water intake of about 2.0 litres for women and 2.5 litres for men. A glass of water straight after getting up is therefore not a wellness gimmick – it is simply sensible.
Anyone who starts the morning with a glass of Herbalife Aloe Vera Mango and water creates a pleasant routine for their fluid intake. It tastes good, it becomes a habit – and that is exactly the point.
Breakfast: protein beats empty calories
A croissant with jam. Quick, sweet, familiar. But filling? Hardly. After two hours hunger is back, often accompanied by an energy slump.
A study by Leidy et al. (2015, published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition) showed that a high-protein breakfast with 20 to 30 grams of protein improves the feeling of fullness and clearly reduces cravings over the course of the day. The real problem, then, is not that you are hungry at 10 o'clock – but that your breakfast had too little substance.
The Swiss Society for Nutrition (SGE) recommends a balanced breakfast of wholegrain products, protein (dairy products, eggs), fruit and enough fluid. That sounds like effort – but it does not have to be.
A Herbalife Formula 1 shake provides around 18 grams of protein per serving, plus vitamins and minerals. If you like things uncomplicated in the morning, you have a nutrient-rich breakfast prepared in two minutes. Particularly popular: the Formula 1 Café Latte version, which combines breakfast and the pleasure of coffee in one step.
And what about coffee?
Coffee is not the problem. But coffee on an empty stomach – that is less ideal for many people than they think. Stomach acid production rises without any food present. Anyone who instead drinks and eats something first often tolerates their coffee better afterwards.
An invigorating alternative is the Herbalife Herbal Tea Original with caffeine from green and black tea extract. Less intense than an espresso, but enough to get going.
Exercise in the morning: less is more
You do not have to go jogging at 5:30 a.m. That is the good news.
According to FSO health statistics, around 76 % of the Swiss population meet the exercise recommendation of at least 150 minutes of moderate activity a week. But these minutes are often spread very unevenly – and the morning usually stays empty.
Even 10 to 15 minutes of gentle exercise after getting up is enough to get the circulation going:
- Stretching and mobilising – two minutes is enough to loosen the stiffness of the night
- A short walk round the block, especially valuable in daylight for your sleep-wake rhythm
- Simple bodyweight exercises such as squats or press-ups
- Anyone who more sporting can also build in a short HIIT session
The trick lies not in the intensity, but in the regularity. Ten minutes every morning achieves more than one hour once a week.
The morning routine that actually lasts – in 4 steps
Forget complicated 90-minute rituals from podcasts. A realistic healthy morning routine for Swiss everyday life looks more like this:
- Step 1: Get up, drink a large glass of water – with aloe vera if you like
- Step 2: 10 minutes of exercise or stretching before you reach for your phone
- Step 3: A high-protein breakfast – whether a shake, eggs or quark with berries
- Step 4: A deliberate moment of calm – even 3 minutes without a screen counts

What most people get wrong about routines
A routine does not work because it is perfect. It works because it is simple enough to keep up at 6:15 on a Monday morning too. After a bad night. In the rain. Without motivation.
According to FSO data, around 29 % of the Swiss population report suffering from sleep problems. That means: almost a third start the morning already behind. All the more important is a routine that does not depend on willpower, but on automatism.
Anyone who opts for more mindful eating with support benefits from exactly that: the decision about what to have for breakfast disappears. That saves mental energy – and you need it for the rest of your day.
Do not start with everything at once. Choose a single building block – the glass of water, the ten minutes of exercise, the better breakfast – and stick with it for three weeks. Then the next one. That is how habits that last come about.
