Hungry in the evening – why the fridge is magnetic after 8 p.m.
The day was long, dinner was two hours ago – and still the stomach speaks up again. According to the 7th Swiss Nutrition Report by the FOPH, many people in Switzerland eat too few vegetables, pulses and wholegrain products during the day, and too much sugar and processed food (source: FOPH – Federal Office of Public Health). This imbalance encourages blood sugar fluctuations – and those are frequently the real trigger for evening cravings. So if you feel hungry in the evening, the problem often lies not in the evening itself, but in what was on your plate during the day.
What many people underestimate: evening hunger is rarely genuine weakness of will. There are solid biological mechanisms behind it.
What is really behind that evening feeling of hunger
The term craving describes a sudden, intense desire for food. It is frequently triggered by drops in blood sugar, a lack of sleep or emotional factors. The combination of several of these triggers in particular makes the evening a high-risk zone for uncontrolled eating.
One decisive factor is sleep. The WHO points out that a lack of sleep increases appetite, because production of the hunger hormone ghrelin rises and the release of leptin – the signal for satiety – falls (source: WHO). So anyone who regularly sleeps too little during the week is practically fighting with a double disadvantage in the evening: the body calls for energy, and the natural satiety signal is dampened.
On top of that comes a surprisingly simple phenomenon: thirst is often confused with hunger. The Swiss Society for Nutrition recommends 1–2 litres of unsweetened drinks a day (source: SGE). So if you want to go to the fridge in the evening – drink a large glass of water first and wait ten minutes. Often the matter resolves itself.
Five concrete tips against evening hunger
1. Eat properly during the day – above all in the morning
The real problem is not the evening, but the morning. Anyone who skips breakfast or only drinks a coffee starts the day with an empty tank. The body then takes the missing energy back in the evening – with interest. A balanced Herbalife breakfast with enough protein and fibre can make a real difference here, because it stabilises blood sugar from the outset.
2. Use protein strategically
Studies show that a high-protein diet raises the satiety hormone GLP-1 and lowers the hunger hormone ghrelin. 25–30 grams of protein per meal is considered effective for maintaining satiety over several hours (Leidy et al., 2015, published in Advances in Nutrition). A Herbalife Formula 1 shake provides around 18 grams of protein per serving and works as a light, nutrient-rich evening meal – especially when you no longer want heavy cooking in the evening.
3. Do not forget fibre
The EFSA recommends at least 25 grams of fibre a day (source: EFSA). Fibre slows digestion and makes sure satiety lasts longer. In practice that means: anyone who chooses a salad with pulses for dinner instead of white bread with cold cuts will feel considerably fewer cravings two hours later.
4. Clever snacks instead of going without
Forbidding yourself the evening snack entirely does not work permanently for most people. Better: deliberately plan a high-protein snack. Herbalife Protein Chips Barbecue satisfy the desire for something savoury without your having to reach for a bag of crisps. If you prefer something sweet, the Herbalife Protein Bar Vanilla Almond is a practical alternative – portioned and with a controlled nutrient profile.
5. Create evening rituals
Evening eating is often less about hunger than about habit. The television is on, the hands look for something to do. Replace reaching for the crisp packet with a new ritual: a warm Herbalife tea, for example. Low in calories, warming and a deliberate action that breaks the automatic snacking.
Meal structure: the underestimated game changer
The SGE recommends a regular meal structure with three main meals and, where needed, one or two snacks (source: SGE – Swiss food pyramid). It sounds banal, but it is consistently underestimated. Anyone who eats only a salad without a protein source at midday and skips the afternoon snack has a calorie deficit at 9 p.m. that the body wants to make up.
Meals with a low glycaemic index – that is, complex carbohydrates combined with protein and healthy fats – stabilise blood sugar far more effectively than isolated carbohydrates. That applies particularly to the last meal of the day.
Have you ever paid conscious attention to how your dinner is put together – not just what you eat, but in what combination?
Fighting evening hunger means taking care during the day
Anyone who regularly struggles with cravings in the evening should focus not on bans but on a better supply across the whole day. Enough protein, enough fibre, regular meals and mindful hydration – these are not revolutionary insights, but they work.
