Skincare for beginners: why your skin deserves more than water and soap
Do you sometimes stand in front of the bathroom mirror and wonder whether your skincare is actually enough? You are not alone in that. Many adults in Switzerland use the same two or three products for years – without knowing whether they suit their own skin type at all. What many people underestimate: the skin is the largest organ of the human body. In adults it weighs 5 to 10 kilograms on average and covers an area of about 1.5 to 2 square metres (source: Wikipedia – skin). An organ of this size deserves well-thought-out care – and that need not be complicated at all.
The real problem is not a lack of interest, but being overwhelmed by hundreds of products, trends and contradictory advice. Yet solid skincare for beginners can be reduced to three pillars: cleansing, moisturising and sun protection.
The three pillars of a simple skincare routine
The dermatological consensus worldwide is astonishingly clear when it comes to the basics. Three steps are enough to start with – carried out consistently, morning and evening.
- Cleansing: Gentle cleansing removes dirt, excess sebum and environmental particles without attacking the natural skin barrier. Aggressive soaps with a high pH can do more harm than good.
- Moisturising: Regardless of skin type – oily skin needs moisture too. A good moisturiser stabilises the skin barrier and protects against drying out.
- Sun protection: The most important and most frequently skipped step. The WHO recommends sun protection from a UV index of 3 or higher, with at least SPF 15 (source: who.int – UV radiation).
In Switzerland the last point is particularly relevant. Anyone who hikes or skis in the mountains exposes their skin to considerably stronger UV radiation than in the lowlands. The FOPH (Federal Office of Public Health) gives detailed information on its website about UV radiation and skin cancer prevention and recommends consistent sun protection – even when the sky is cloudy.
Skincare from outside: choosing the right products for beginners
If you are only just starting to look into skincare, you do not have to buy ten jars at once. A matched system makes getting started easier than a jumble of individual products. The Herbalife SKIN® line offers a practical option here: the Herbalife SKIN Basic Product Pack contains a cleansing cream, a toner and a moisturiser – exactly the three pillars in one set. Ingredients such as vitamin B3, vitamin C and aloe vera are matched to one another.
For everyone who would like to extend their routine after a few weeks, there is the Herbalife SKIN Advanced Product Pack. It adds further steps to the basic care, such as eye care and more intensive moisturising – a complete routine with no guesswork.
One product that arouses curiosity among many skincare beginners is the Herbalife Skin Line Minimising Serum. It is easy to build into an existing routine and is applied before the moisturiser.
When will I see the first changes?
Patience is the underestimated factor. The skin renews itself in cycles of about 28 days. Anyone starting a new routine should give it at least four to six weeks before passing judgement. Instant results are unrealistic – and any product that promises them should make you sceptical.
Skincare from within: nutrients that support your skin
What happens on the skin often begins inside the body. In its assessments the EFSA has identified several nutrients that contribute to the maintenance of normal skin. These include vitamin A, biotin (vitamin B7), niacin (vitamin B3), vitamin C, zinc, copper and iodine – all approved health claims according to the EU register (source: efsa.europa.eu). Vitamin C additionally contributes to normal collagen formation for the normal function of the skin.
A balanced diet provides many of these nutrients. If you would like to complement your supply specifically, you can consider the Herbalife Collagen Skin Booster as a practical addition – it contains collagen peptides and skin-relevant vitamins.
And then there is water. The Swiss Society for Nutrition (SGE) recommends a daily fluid intake of about 1 to 2 litres of water (source: sge-ssn.ch). It sounds banal – but it is astonishingly often forgotten in everyday life.
The most common mistakes among skincare beginners
One mistake I see again and again: introducing too many products at once. When a reaction then appears – redness, blemishes, a feeling of tightness – it is completely unclear which product is responsible. Better: introduce one product after another, a week apart.
Further typical stumbling blocks:
- Using sun protection only in summer – UV radiation works in winter and through clouds too.
- Over-irritating the skin with exfoliants – once or twice a week is quite enough.
- Buying products for the wrong skin type because they happen to be in fashion.
Recognising your own skin type
Normal, dry, oily, combination or sensitive skin – which type are you? A simple test: wash your face in the morning with water only and wait two hours without applying any products. Does the T-zone shine? Does the skin feel tight? Does everything feel balanced? This observation gives you a first indication. If in doubt, a visit to a dermatologist helps.
Your next step towards better-cared-for skin
Skincare for beginners need not be complicated. Three steps, applied consistently, make the biggest difference. Complement your care from outside with a nutrient-rich diet and enough fluid – and give your skin the time it needs.
